Some of the charges against Kodak in the last few years include: * May 1999: EPA charges Kodak for failure to monitor emissions of volatile organic compounds. The EPA fined Kodak $175,000 Fine (Air/Water Pollution Report, 2001). * August 18, 2000: EPA inspectors visited the Kodak facility located on Lake Avenue. Inspectors determined that between 1995 and 1997, Kodak under-reported the quantity of specific harmful chemicals it disposed of in the Genesee River and also the amount shipped out. Furthermore, the company failed to file the proper reports about the types of and the quantity of other harmful chemicals it was using. The specific chemicals in question included 2-methoxyethanol, phenol, manganese compounds, ethylene glycol and nitrate compounds (US Environmental Protection Agency, June, 2000). * October 18, 2000: EPA charges Kodak with failure to test and monitor certain valves and pumps at its Lake Avenue facility in Rochester. Ongoing testing and monitoring of emissions of organic chemicals is required. Jeanne M. Fox, EPA Regional Administrator, stated: "These compounds are not only potentially harmful if inhaled, but are major contributors to smog. EPA has strict regulations in place to ensure that when companies deal with these type of chemicals in their waste streams, they do so carefully, making sure at every point in the process that volatile organics are not released into the environment." The EPA was seeking a fine of $303,064 against Kodak (US Environmental Protection Agency, October, 2000). The EPA also required Kodak to come into compliance within 60 days (US Environmental Protection Agency, October, 2000).
