knowledge of God, that is a "discussion of the existence and attributes of God," is carried on strictly through the use of human reason (Hodges 1). Relational knowledge of God, that is, the knowledge perceived by the individual as coming from a personal relationship with the Divine is referred to as "revealed" theology, which has as its founding premise that divine revelation exists, that is, the knowledge of God that is delivered through divine revelation directly to an individual. Propositional knowledge, that is, knowledge founded upon philosophical proposition that endeavor to prove the existence of God, are open to rebuttal. While enlightening and intellectually stimulating, if this is the sole foundation for faith than faith can be undermined by opposing opinion. Relational knowledge, on the other hand, is grounded in personal experience or the personal experience of others, which means that it cannot be disproved through reason as it is knowledge of what is felt and experienced by the individual. 2. How one comes to "know" God Religious experience can take a variety of forms, but in none of them can God be directly perceived by human senses as an object, even though believers testify that there is a consistent "awareness of his presence and activity" (Hodges 101). A devout person will say that he or she "sees" "God in all things" (Hodges 101).
