is the collection of activities that manages collected data; creates new knowledge from collected data; and disseminates that knowledge to others so that they can use it too. Information vs
Knowledge "Quantitative information is easily structured, and is normally associated with simple hierarchical relationships" (text, p. 202). The qualitative information that collectively
is referred to as organizational knowledge cannot be so neatly categorized. "Knowledge is related to experience, judgment, and the passing of time, and is therefore not easily structured, is
very dynamic, and associated with rich forms of communication (i.e., interactive, two-way)" (text, p. 205). On the other hand, information "is that which
is a constituent of an organizational construct, such as a business process" (text, p. 205). It is "characterized by two dimensions - easily structure things called data, and very
complex and dynamic things called knowledge" (text, p. 205). Data classes serve several general functions. "Atomic" data is necessary and useful for
business processes. It also is necessary for providing decision support based on analytical operations. Data "that facilitates knowledge transfer" (text, p. 206) is that which is used for
learning and knowledge development. When knowledge becomes highly structured and explicit, then its data can be used to shape organizational behavior and culture change within the organization (text, p.
