sure? Can true knowledge really exist? The Cartesian Cogito, or the premise "I think. Therefore I am," to some extent dissolves skepticism. At the same time, anyone who contemplates the
statement in all its meaning may still be skeptical about existence. Descartes and his supporters firmly believed that the cogito does resolve skepticism. Yet, it seems that at other
times Descartes contradicts his original argument. Descartes created a series of meditations to further explore this dilemma. The dreaming argument that Descartes posted to some extent invalidates the assumption that
one knows they exist simply because they think. Descartes hypothesized that there are no true signs in life which can be distinguished from dreaming. Then, he said that if there
are no such signs, he does not know if he is dreaming or not and finally, the last statement in the proof is a conclusion that suggests that he does
not know whether or not he is dreaming. The example of the dreaming argument is simply one concept that emanates from Descartes Meditations, but it has numerous theoretical implications. It
has implications about epistemology. That is, if one does not know whether or not they are dreaming, how can one know anything is real? Again, the Cartesian Cogito is something
that resolves the problem for some. Still, this is a problem that many philosophers have grappled with. It seems at first that the dreaming argument is a far fetched
challenge, but other philosophers had some of the same ideas. Hume also wondered about such things. How does one trust his or her own consciousness? Hume for example denied that
the identity of self was strictly attached to the idea of a thinking being. David Humes ideas about knowledge are also powerful, but differ from the notion that thinking,
