Between 1962 and 2004, only twenty-seven cases of this condition were reported in the US (Wilson and Fundukian). As its common name suggests, the disease results in excessive sleepiness and sleep (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke 1). Those afflicted with the condition have sometimes been known to sleep up to twenty hours daily (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke 1). Additional symptoms include federal fatique, irritability, disorientation and a heightened sensitivity to noise (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke 1). The disorder can also result in the compulsive eating, hallucinations, and even an "abnormally uninhibited sex drive" (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke 1). In extremely rare instances Klein Levine is associated with violent episodes (Wilson and Fundukian). As might be expected, Kleine-Levin syndrome is believed to result from problems with hypothalamus function. The hypothalamus, of course, is a critical part of the brain that controls many aspects of our physiology and behavior. One of the more interesting aspects of the hypothalamus is its influence over our appetite and sleep patterns. Given the impacts of Kleine Levin and male sex drive, it is interesting to note that there are distinct differences in the preoptic area (SDNA-POA) of the hypothalamus between males and females. These differences include the size and number of cells, the localization of these cells, the crytoarchitecture, and the neurotransmitter/neuromodulator content. Thacker, Aeron, Haider et. al.
