In Canada. It is the story of their childhood and their coming of age and becoming men. As would be expected, there are many different elements in a story of
Native men dealing with European ways. The following paper examines and analyzes various elements in the story. Kiss of the Fur Queen One of the most powerful elements
in the story is the school that is presented in the story. It is a Catholic residential school and the teachers are terrifying, "fearful," and ultimately vicious and cruel (Highway
58). Jeremiah is beaten and sexually abused and all but destroyed through this particular institution. The institution of this school, and the rigid harshness of Catholicism that would destroy all
natives and all that belonged to the natives, is a very powerful element in the story and almost serves as a character unto itself. It could well be considered the
antagonist of the story, the character that represents hatred and evil. It is the character that must be ultimately risen above, especially for Jeremiah, and this he ultimately does. The
character, the real physical characters, are merely parts of the whole that is the Church and the school. [T]he fearsome grade-one teacher, Sister Saint-Antoine" and "the even more fearsome principal
of the school" are clear presentations of this perspective. Another powerful element in the story, and one that is mentioned only a few times in relationship to its original
name that is recognized by many tribes of natives, is the trickster. Although the trickster can be easily envisioned as being nothing more than the Fur Queen, the trickster is
far more and is presented differently in the story than the Fur Queen is. In one point in the story Jeremiah is telling the story of the trickster, a fox.
