following paper examines if and how King was influence in this letter by Thoreaus Civil Disobedience. King and Thoreau It appears that, In college, Martin had read an
essay by Henry David Thoreau" which can generally be understood to be the infamous Civil Disobedience essay (Scholastic). This is noted by another author who noted that, "Dr. King had
been inspired by Henry David Thoreaus essay Civil Disobedience" (Historynet.com). This was likely because he was always a young man who fetl that injustice was incredibly wrong and he desired
to do something about it, which is essentially why he was in jail in the first place. King liked the ideas that Thoreau had presented and they inspired him
in relationship to disobeying evil and unjust laws (Scholastic). "And he began to search harder for a way to fight against evil...Then one day, he heard a speech about the
great leader of India, Mahatma Gandhi" (Scholastic). Interestingly enough, Gandhi had also been inspired by Thoreau for the very same reasons and much of how Gandhi fought against injustice was
garnered from the ideals of Thoreau as well (Scholastic). In light of these facts it is clear that King was not only influenced directly by Thoreau but influenced by Gandhi
who was directly influenced by Thoreau. Gandhi, "Like Thoreau...believed that men should gladly go to jail when they break such laws" (Scholastic).
