while others are kind and peaceful like Ghandi. In comparing and contrasting leaders, their true motivation is likely important and for both Martin Luther King and Niccolo Machiavelli, there is
attention to what is good for the people. They were not concerned with themselves. Rather, they wanted to make a difference for the world. Each in their own way did,
but it seems that King had done it in a way as to promote positive aspects of the political milieu as opposed to merely accentuating what is good for the
people. Both were good leaders, but King seems to have been wiser in terms of applying his knowledge. Of course, they both lived in very different times and places. Machiavelli
(1515) wrote a book called The Prince, which is a work that hints at balance. According to The Prince, rulers must have superior qualities which exude fairness and equity
(1515). The ruler must be a judge, weighing the good and bad components of an equation and determining the right thing to do. It is not that he applauds or
promotes democracy and while he considers the will of the people important, that is not the be all and end all of leadership. Leadership is more than simply doing what
the people say they want. It is acting to fulfill the needs of the people in the most ethical way possible. Machiavelli was not concerned with his own personal
gain. It is not as if he had been thinking about power when he wrote The Prince, even though it does appear that power is a part of the equation.
Rather, he was concerned with the needs of the people and the legacy of the leader. In fact, his work that focuses on character is a favorite of leaders who
