together. They traded and enjoyed a rather symbiotic relationship. However, as the colonists grew in knowledge, resources and desires, experiencing a greater sense of safety and a greater sense of
stability, they began to see the Natives as a hindrance to further growth. This led to one of the most powerful wars in the early history of the colony, King
Philips War. The following paper examines how it was the greed of the colonists that led to this war, and how that greed ultimately destroyed a people. The paper examines
the times before the war, during the war, and after the war in this discussion. King Philips War In the beginning the relationship between the colonists and the
Natives was fairly stable. In the beginning the colonists needed to rely heavily on the Natives because they did not know how to grow foods that would work in the
new land. They traded with the Natives in order to survive and to grow. One author notes that, "The early settlers carried on trade with the natives, because it was
profitable, and because it was often necessary, in keeping the colonists from starvation" (King Philips War: Introduction, 2005). However, at the same time there were tensions between the two because
they were so vastly different in how they lived and how they saw life, with many colonists believing it was imperative that the Natives be converted to Christianity. The
peace between the two, although shaky, existed for approximately 50 years under Philips father, Massasoit who was a leader of the Wampanoag people, and under Governor William Bradford (King Philips
War: The Causes, 2005). However, with these leaders gone tensions became more and more chaotic and tangible. There is no real indication that there was one particular event that caused
