that some of these portrayals are wrong. Discussion We want to consider three things: his involvement with the Inquisition; his alleged "rape" of Latin America; and his stubbornness-though why that
should automatically be seen as a negative isnt clear. At any rate, lets see what we can find out. The Inquisition was a terrifying institution, but was it Philips idea?
No; it was created by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1478, with the support of Pope Sixtus IV (History of Spain). It was to be used to find Jews who were
believed to be "masquerading as Christians" (History of Spain). The Inquisition is not completely suppressed in Spain until 1834 (History of Spain). When Philip comes to the throne in 1555,
the Inquisition is apparently not as strong as it once was, since he "reactivates" it at the same time he comes to power (Philip II). However, despite the fact that
Philip is a Catholic, it seems that his aim in using the Inquisition was political not religious: "Although Philip was a devout Roman Catholic who sought to repress heresy whenever
feasible, he subordinated religious questions to his political aims. His relations with the papacy were generally bad, because most of the popes feared Spanish power in Italy. Religious persecution and
the Spanish Inquisition were used to eliminate resistance to Philips policy of centralizing power under an absolute monarchy" (Philips reign, 2007). This indicates that he was certainly aware of the
power of the Inquisition and not reluctant to use it, but not for the ends originally supposed. In addition, we read that he was not a tyrant; that portrait is
apparently the work of his "enemies and later writers" (Character, 2007). He was instead the "embodiment of the hard-working civil servant and bureaucrat" who "sought to direct the destinies of
