best and worst in human nature. This paper explores how these characteristics are exhibited and by which characters. Discussion There are only two characters in the play who appear to
be wholly good: Cordelia, Lears youngest daughter and Edgar, the son of the Earl of Gloucester. Lears older daughters, Goneril and Regan are complete beasts, as is Edmund, Gloucesters bastard
son. King Lear himself is a sort of amalgam of these extremes: a selfish and somewhat dull-witted man who still has great dignity and pride, and who in the last
moment of the play, reveals himself as a truly loving father who finally understands the depths of his daughters affection, as well as her wisdom. The play opens with
Lear making a horrendous mistake: he has decided to divide his kingdom among his daughters because hes getting old and is tired of the burdens of kingship: "... tis our
fast intent / To shake all cares and business from our age, / Conferring them on younger strengths, while we / Unburthen/d crawl toward death" (I.i.38-41). But he should not
be considering this. A king (or queen) is a ruler for life; they cannot simply quit because theyre tired of it. If he were planning to abdicate in favor of
one of the women, that would be different, but hes not-he is dividing the kingdom without naming a clear successor. By doing so, he sets the stage for the tragedy
to come. It can also be argued that he should have known this would happen, but the fact that he doesnt see it shows that he is blind when it
comes to dealings with others. He is not a bad man, but a misguided one. The truly evil people here are his elder daughters, Goneril and Regan. They each seek
