the most charmed of lives; they commanded the respect of their subjects and also had access to special powers that made them forces to be reckoned with. Gilgamesh and
Medea were two spectacular physical specimens who seemed to possess the greatest of human gifts. But they were also extremely susceptible to fits of violent rage that threatened the
stability of their respective societies. Because of their character flaws, Gilgamesh and Medea would chart life courses filled with bumps and tragic detours that only they themselves could change.
King Gilgamesh is a towering figure, a leader who exudes supreme self-confidence. As the sun of the revered Sumerian goddess Rimat-Ninsun, he is "two-thirds of him divine, one-third human"
(I.ii.1). Gilgamesh believes strength is power and he leads more by bullying than by example. As ruler of Uruk, he thinks that anything is his for the taking,
including people. Gilgamesh "does not allow the son to go with his father; day and night he oppresses the weak... Gilgamesh does not let the young woman go to
her mother, the girl to the warrior, the bride to the young groom" (I.ii.12-13, 27-28). He pillages and rapes local women until finally, the creation goddesses intervene and create
a primitive alter-ego for him that would keep his own in check. Only when he encounters the compassionate Enkidu does Gilgamesh begin to retreat from his course of self-destruction
and chart another, more honorable life direction. His strong kinship with Enkidu enables Gilgamesh to become less ego-centered and better able to focus on others besides himself. When
the formidable duo fought the mighty Humbaba, Gilgamesh demonstrates his supportiveness of his comrade (and his personal growth) by assuring Enkidu that he "will surpass all of them... a friend
