example, as will be seen in Tim OBriens "The Things They Carried," some people must merely accept their situation and thus become somewhat alienated from the truths so that they can survive in a war scenario. In Octavia Butlers novel "Kindred" the lead character must go back and live life as a slave in various periods of history and she learns just how alienated and removed the slaves must become in relationship to their particular scenarios. The following paper examines these two novels, separately, discussing how the lead characters deal with their experiences, experiences where they do not belong, witness alienation and yet are somehow objective witnesses. Kindred In this novel we have the character of Dana who is quite the modern woman and not one that is lacking in education. She is a confident woman with a knowledge of science, and medicine, and history itself. We would imagine that such a woman would not fall into slave mentality very easily for she would be angered at the conditions she was thrown into every time she traveled back in time. In all honesty, she is a modern woman who is far smarter than any white man she will encounter in the past. But yet she immerses herself in the slave mentality without thought it seems. As she develops in the book she comes to realize that it is very frightening how easily she falls into the slave mentality and "never realized how easily people could be trained to accept slavery" (Butler 101). She is powerless and somewhat alienated in her surroundings. But, at the same time she is really in these situations and must do whatever she can to survive, feeling somewhat alienated so that she can deal with the realities around her. We the reader are ...
