Many remember the battle as one of great importance, as does Michael Shaara who wrote Killer Angels, a work of historic fiction that focuses on the Battle of Gettysburg. While a work of fiction, the book is quite realistic and a poignant remembrance of a quite significant historical period. Shaara has a unique style, one which many novelists might envy, and he further possesses the uncanny ability to bring his characters to life. The best part of historic fiction is that the reader not only is able to enjoy a gripping story, but learns about history at the same time. Here, Shaara holds true to the craft. Interestingly, the author focuses on a short period of three days. Yet, the novel is close to the 400 page mark so one can get a sense of the inordinate amount of detail this author includes. In fact, the detail is what makes the work so compelling. The reader cannot help to be drawn in and care about the characters. However, within the pages of this intriguing book, there are scenes which are rather chilling, demonstrating what it was actually like to be in battle, using the ammunition they had then and dealing with harsh weather conditions without modern equipment. That is another eye opener. When reading such works that take place in past times, there does seem to be elicited a sense of thankfulness. The world has evolved to such a state that people no longer have to suffer greatly. Soldiers who lived then might have been saved.
