specific region of what we know as Russia today, as it involves ancient history. Regardless, Kievan Rus was a very rich and intriguing region with an equally rich and intriguing
history. The following paper examines the history of this region from around 880-1054. Kievan Rus "The early history of Russia, like those
of many countries, is one of migrating peoples and ancient kingdoms. In fact, early Russia was not exactly "Russia," but a collection of cities that gradually coalesced into an empire"
(Ancient Russia, 2006). The history of Kievan Rus begins when a Scandanavian people, the Varangians, invaded Eastern Europe and the leader, Rurik, took the city of Novgorod in 862 (Ancient
Russia, 2006). His successor, Oleg, further extended the power of that city and in the year 882 took over the city of Kiev (Ancient Russia, 2006). "Olegs attainment of
rule over Kiev marked the first establishment of a unified, dynastic state in the region. Kiev became the center of a trade route between Scandinavia and Constantinople, and Kievan Rus,
as the empire came to be known, flourished for the next three hundred years" (Ancient Russia, 2006). After Oleg apparently came
Igor who died in a journey/battle and then his wife Olga took over the rule D. Olga (945-964?) There are chronicles that speak of Olgas determination and pursuit to revenge
her husbands death (Kievan Rus: Notes, 2006). The chronicles tell that she had the emissaries of her enemies buried alive, that they are burned alive, and she then goes "to
the land of Dereva to mourn Igor and has her men kill 5,000 Derevlians and then defeats Dereva in battle" (Kievan Rus: Notes, 2006). She is also cited as being
