good: if one knows the good, then one does the good. In his work "Sickness Unto Death" he addresses some issues which deal with despair as an important element. In
the following paper we examine Kierkegaards assumptions as they relate to despair and Socrates as seen in his work "Sickness Unto Death." Does Socrates Despair? Kierkegaard indicates that
despair is the sickness that is with all people. "The solution to despair is a condition in which the individual has established a relationship with the power that established it
(in other words, with God). People may appear to despair over facts of the world, but despair is in fact always an internal problem for which the individual is personally
responsible" (SparkNotes). From this simplistic perspective we can perhaps argue that Socrates despaired just like every human being. His despair, however, was perhaps in his search for the truth.
The time of Socrates was a time in history before the coming of Christ and as such Socrates would have no knowledge of the Christian religion. This would indicate that
his perceptions of good and evil, or the search for righteousness of some kind, was not related to Christianity but truly possessed elements of despair as he sought truth and
he sought to bring truth to others. Does Socrates Do Evil? From Kierkegaards position it is perhaps truth that all people do evil to some extent. With Kierkegaards
work we see that he related despair with sin and evil. But, understanding that one cannot do evil unless one is educated and aware of doing good. In many ways
this may well be related to Christianity, for people can argue that without knowing the Word of God they cannot be expected to follow the word of God. Socrates
