Interactions between European Americans and Native Americans in the early chapters of our history were extremely variable. Unfortunately, it can be contended that the majority of
these interactions were more negative than positive. Hundreds, if not thousands, of examples could be presented to support this contention. The most interesting examples concern the leadership strategies
of the two groups. Those alliances that were formed, however, became involved in some of the most important events marking the interaction between the European interlopers and the indigenous
peoples of this continent. The alliances formed through the actions of Native Americans such as Pontiac, Tecumseh, and Handsome Lake are of particular interest in this regard. It
can be further contended, however, that as varied and valiant as these efforts were in their approach and strategy, each failed to adequately maintain the cultural integrity of the people
they were designed to protect. They failed because of the overwhelming tide of whites who flooded the country and continually demanded more and more from its peoples and resources.
The struggle to maintain political and cultural autonomy among Native American peoples during the early chapters of the history of European domination in
the so-called "New World" sometimes took slightly different directions. Such was the case with the careers of Pontiac, Tecumseh and Handsome Lake. While two of these Native Americans
leaders openly rebelled against the impending threat of white domination, the third attempted to incorporate European lifeways into critical aspects of his own peoples culture. At the same time
various leaders of European origin were making critical choices in regard with their interaction with Native Americans. North America during colonial times were
