over time. In philosophy, mechanism is a theory that all natural phenomena can be explained by physical causes. The fundamental aspects of the philosophy of mechanism have been maintained.
For example the quantitative law which explains all natural phenomena is still an integral part of modern day physics. The motivations that led some philosophers to mechanism in the
17th and 18th centuries now lead philosophers of a similar temperament towards the thought that everything in the universe is physical, which leaves the specification of the primitive contents of
the universe to a more complete view of physics. As scientists continued their study of the universe and the world, they were able to delve deeper into the philosophy of
their predecessors and with the advancement of inventions and current advancements in technology, the scientist of today are able to make more educated statements concerning the matter and movement of
that matter in the world. DEVELOPMENT OF MECHANISM PHILOSOPHY As the scientific revolution gained speed and prominence, it gave rise to the worldwide view that likened the universe to a
machine. The view of the universe as compared to a machine can actually be traced back to the Greek Atomist, but at that time in history, philosophical thought was
dominated by Aristotelianism (McMullen, 2002). Due to the dominance of Aristotelianism, the idea of mechanical philosophy did not enter the mainstream of scientific thought until the seventeenth century (McMullen,
2002). FRANCIS BACON Francis Bacon lived from 1561 until 1626 (The Philosophy..., 2006). A contemporary of Descartes, Bacon witnessed the first conquests of modern science, observed the first significant
inventions of modern man, and also experienced the entry of England into the ranks of the great nations. He was very enthusiastic about the advent of science in his world.
