U.S. interaction in world events has changed radically over time.
Between 1877 and 1945 we moved away from our initial policy of isolationism and towards full world immersion. Today, of course, we are a world power. During
our earlier history, however, we were only tentatively beginning to feel out our path. Five key events in particular were milestones on that path. These events were 1.
the sinking of the British passenger ship the Lusitania, 2. the British interception of a key German document that pertained to the US, 3. our countrys participation in
the Versailles Treaty Negotiations at the end of World War I, 4. the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and 5. the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima Japan.
In the opening years of World War I, of course, the US was not involved in the fray. We were, in fact, determined to
stay out of it because we believed it didnt threaten our interests. In Europe, of course, everyone had an interest it seems. Competition over colonial holdings and other
resources led to increased military powers and resentment of competing powers (Willmott, 2009). The US, however, was on a completely different continent and we just didnt believe this war
