of what his life has been: a search for identity. This paper discusses what the book is about, and a readers reaction to Johnsons work. Discussion The title of the
book is telling; it implies that somehow Johnson isnt really a Mexican-American, but was put together from spare parts or chose to identify himself as mixed race because he thought
it would be cool or interesting or something. In reality, his mother is Mexican-American married to an Anglo, so he comes by his name legitimately. But the contrast between it
and how he sees himself is marked. He has spent most of his life trying to figure out what he is, who he is, and where he belongs. The chapters
that deal with his experiences at Harvard University are probably the most telling, because in addition to having to deal with his heritage, hes also out of his cultural element.
Born and raised in Southern California where Latinos and mixed race people are much more common than in the east, he is a "fish out of water" at the university.
He is isolated from the experience by his ethnicity, but also by his economic status. He is poorer than many of the other students and he is sometimes amazed by
the amounts of money they spend on things; hes equally amazed at high tight-fisted wealthy people can be. When he accepts an invitation to spend time at the beach with
a classmate, they stop for clam chowder and steamed clams at a roadside diner; the other young man borrows $5 to pay his share (Johnson, 1999). The loan was never
repaid, either, despite the fact that the borrower was rich: "Five bucks was nothing to him. For me, it equaled a night on the town of burgers, fries, and beer
