India is, in many ways, the "worlds largest paradox" (Unger N16). A political scientists at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in Delhi, Yogendra Yadav, has pointed out
India is, perhaps, the only country in the world where the lower down on the social scale people are, the more likely it is that they will vote (Unger N16).
On the other hand, while India is vibrantly democratic, and democracy is one of the few things that receive universal reverence from this diverse people, it is also a land
where poverty is rampant, and social inequality abounds (Unger N16). The state of Kerala, nestled in the southwestern corner of India, is ?however ? a notable exception to this
observation. Over the last century or so, social transformation has occurred in Kerala that has changed the situation in this province from one of severe social oppression and inequality,
as well as poverty to a contemporary status of social development that places it at the forefront of development in non-industrialized societies (Anghie, et al 306). Although there is still
poverty in Kerala, it is by far the most socially advanced part of India, as well as being ahead of nearly all developing countries in terms of social development (Anghie,
