A 2 page book review that analyzes Preparing for the Twenty-first Century by Paul Kennedy. Beginning with the concern that Malthus expressed two hundred years ago in regards to the England's eighteenth-century population explosion, Kennedy then proceeds to relate this to the current rate of growth of the world's population. He argues quite convincingly that the ecological problems of the later part of the twentieth century will become critical as the world enters the new millennium. The central theme of Kennedy's book is that education will play an intrinsic role in whether or not the world can support the estimated 10 billion human beings that will soon be living here.

10 billion human beings that will soon be living here. Although Kennedy begins in the eighteen-century, this book is not a historical work. Many of Kennedys arguments are made
from the perspective of history and what can be learned from the past, but these observations are applied as to what can be expected in the near future. Kennedy postulates
that todays global forces, which are effecting change, are rapidly moving the worlds population beyond traditional guidelines into an entirely new set of circumstances. Kennedy is skeptical as whether or
not the political institutions that are currently in place are equipped to deal with the challenges that over-population, environmental damage, and technology-driven revolutions will soon present. Consequently, the
first portion of this work evaluates these forces for change that are bearing down on the world and offers generation speculation as to how these transformations might impact society in
general. Kennedy does an admirable job of demonstrating how the population explosion that the world is currently experiencing is interconnected with such varied topics as illegal migration, the robotics revolution
and global labor demands (p. 17). This discussion reveals an ever-widening rift between the industrialized countries of the world and the poorer Third-World countries that are still in the process
