A 5 page paper. Was there a specific point in time when Americans began distrusting the government? According to many, that time was the assassination of President Kennedy and the subsequent Warren Commission's report. Prior to that event, 75 percent of Americans believed the government did what was right and since then, as many as 75 percent do not trust the government. This essay investigates this premise using support from numerous authors. There have been other events, incidents and reasons for the increasing lack of trust, some of which are explained here. about three-quarters of Americans said they trusted the federal government to do the right thing most or all of the time" (1997). Today, about the same proportion do not trust
the government to do the right thing, even most of the time (Murray, 1997). Our topic for this essay is how the assassination of President John F. Kennedy fueled American
distrust of government. Remembering something read or heard, there was one official during that time who said that we may never know the full story of the Kennedy assassination in
our lifetime. Forty years later, that statement has been proven to be all too true. Many writers have identified the Kennedy assassination as the point when distrust of the government
became rampant (Spencer, John and Spencer, Anne, nd). Spencer and Spencer stated: "Distrust of government is perhaps most typified in the beliefs that followed in the wake of the Kennedy
assassination on 1963" (nd). In fact, two-thirds of the American population does not believe the conclusions of the Warren Commission that Oswald acted on his own to kill the President
(Spencer, John and Spencer, Anne, nd). They believe there is a very strong cover-up in this case (Spencer, John and Spencer, Anne, nd). Some believe that it wasnt even the
Mafia or Castro but that high-placed officials in some of Americas institutions were involved, some have even suggested the Vice-President Johnson was involved (Spencer, John and Spencer, Anne, nd).
