They are undoubtedly correct. However, Kohn (2006) makes an equally valid point when he writes that educators abuse scientific research when they rely on it too heavily. In making this argument, Kohn points out how even the most rigorous application of the scientific method can result in "on-average findings" that are not applicable to every child (Kohn, 2006). While science is good for finding solutions that work well from a general perspective, Kohn (2006) argues that the art of teaching is about finding out what also works best for an individual child. In other words, if an empirically proven technique does not work for a particular child, the teacher is not relieved of the responsibility of finding a technique that does work. A child cannot be abandoned simply because he or she does not conform to the results of an empirical study. Kohn writes that "One of the few universal truths about human learning is that there are very few universal truth about human learning" (Kohn, 2006). Like Stanovich and Stanovich (2003), Kohn also states that it is important for teachers to differentiate between studies that are well-conducted and those where the methodology is flawed. He points out that researchers often tend to generalize and teachers, as consumers, should demand details, ask questions. If a researcher states "traditional classroom discipline techniques" have been shown to "effective," teachers should ask "Effective at what? Promoting meaningful learning? Concern for others? Or merely eliciting short-term obedience?" (Kohn, 2006). Kohn also agrees with Stanovich and Stanovich when he writes that research is also underutilized, as it is "hardly used at all by the people3 who formulate and carry out education policy" (Kohn, 2006).
