very poorly. In fact, they were abused. Unions stopped that abuse. While not all organizations and certainly, not all managers, treat their employees as well as they should, we still
must ask whether or not unions are even needed today. Union membership has declined steadily over the last couple of decades. Frankly, this is a good thing because unions are
no longer reasonable. The leadership in unions seem far more interested in hurting employers than negotiating a reasonable contract for their members. When union avoidance is discussed, the one
organization that is always mentioned is Wal-Mart. The reason is simple. This is the largest retail organization in the world and they do not have remained union-free in the United
States. The paradox regarding this situation is that we all know that Wal-Mart does not pay their employees well nor do they provide benefits to all their employees. Investigations have
revealed that Wal-Mart pays about 12 percent less than average in the industry and they are 30 percent less than average unionized grocery clerks (Miller, 2006). Another study found that
46 percent of Wal-Mart employees children are on Medicaid (Miller, 2006). Turnover is very high at Wal-Mart. One analysis revealed that half of employees stay at the company for
less than one year (Miller, 2006). They have more employee-initiated class action lawsuits filed against them than any other American company. Yet, Wal-Mart has successfully kept the union out.
