This paper argues that the novel has a dual nature: it is both representative of American popular culture (comics) and a work of great literary merit. Discussion Of course, there are a great number of people who will argue that comic books are of high literary merit. However, its hard to imagine that anyone other than rabid fanboys would seriously put a graphic novel or comic book, no matter how well-written and beautifully illustrated, in the same class with something like The great Gatsby or War and Peace. So, with apologies to fanboys and comic lovers everywhere, lets see what makes this novel a cut above the comics it describes. We first examine the book as a work of culture/pulp fiction, and find that it does have many of the escapist plots we find in comics; in fact, because the book itself is about the two young men who create a successful comic strip, many of its adventures are actually those of the comic book hero, the Escapist. In one wildly inventive episode, which makes the cover of the comic, the Escapist is seen in a fistfight with none other than Adolf Hitler (Chabon, 2000). In a dizzying masterstroke, that picture is also the cover of the book itself. The iconic figures in the book within a book include the masked hero, who is an absolute staple for comic books. This mysterious figure has the freedom to do what most people only wish they could do.
