a cold and unloving story of a woman. She is a woman who has been told that her husband is dead and she does not react like most people expect
a new widow to react. Her experiences are very much those of a woman offered freedom and joy in her life, something many women do not experience. The following paper
examines Chopins story and discusses how it relates to a Natalie Merchant song "These Are Days Youll Remember." The paper illustrates that what Chopins character is experiencing is similar to
that described by Merchant in relationship to a freedom that belongs only to that individual, a precious sense of identity that is filled with hope and innocence. Chopin
and Merchant Chopins character, as noted, is a woman who has just heard that her husband is dead. She retreats to her room and as she sits there she slowly
begins to become happy, feeling a sense of freedom that she forgot she could feel. "Free! Body and soul free! she kept whispering" (Chopin). She realized that no more
would she be obligated to be nothing more than a wife. She could find a freedom and a sense of identity that belonged only to her. A sense of innocence
and pure joy was leaping in her being and she was perhaps experiencing a very subtle and simple joy at life itself, something that many women did not, and still
do not, experience in the responsibilities of being a wife and mother. As children there is a sense of freedom and innocence and a growing awareness that truly makes
