about Edna Pontellier who lives in a Creole society. Edna is both passionate and artistic. Being a wife and a mom does not fulfill her needs.
Edna wants her own identity. While her husband, Leonce, is out of town, she had an affair with Robert Lebrun. This allowed her to understand that it was
a life of her own that she wanted. The main male characters in the story are Ednas husband, L?once Pontellier, and her lovers, Robert Lebrun, and Alc?e Arobin.
The Awakening, although somewhat shocking, presents the woman as being able to make a life for herself outside of being a wife and
a mother. Chopin speaks plainly. She allows her protagonist to desire passion. Her role is strong. One finds that a story written by a woman about
a woman gives certain strength to her character that is lacking in a mans story about a woman. In fact, one could say that Edna was given the type
of status that is generally given to males by males. Only a woman could speak so clearly to the manner in which woman question their lives as wives and
mothers. The main conflict in The Awakening is within Edna. The female author shows her protagonist as someone who wants to
