the reader with images of a patriarchal world, but yet a world of women that is unique and incredibly real. They are not necessarily oppressive stories, but yet stories that reveal many intricacies. The following paper summarizes and analyzes three different stories from Kate Chopin. The stories are "The Storm," "The Story of an Hour," and "Desirees Baby." The Storm In "The Storm" we have Calixta, her husband Bobin?t, and their son, Bibi. There is also Alc?e and his wife Clarissa. The primary characters are Calixta and Alcee. The story begins as a storm sets in. Calixtas husband and child are not home and they are worrying that she may be worried. But she is not worried at all and is enjoying her time alone. Then along comes Alc?e and she welcomes him into her home. They engage in a very brief and passionate encounter, he leaves, her husband comes home, and all is fine once more. As Chopin states, "So the storm passed and every one was happy" (Chopin). In many ways it is a surprising story in light of the fact that neither Calixta nor Alc?e are feeling guilty about what they have done. It was a one time thing and they both move on, happy for the change from their boring and traditional lives as parents and spouses. They are independent creatures in a society that does not accept such things. In this Chopin is clearly presenting us with the constricting nature of marriage and parenthood, while allowing us to see the individual within that institution. This is further emphasized by the fact that Alc?e, upon returning home after the interlude, writes his wife a letter saying he misses her but that she should stay with the children in Memphis another month if she is having ...
