way of immunohistochemistry. Indeed, this particular contribution to medicine was one of the most spectacular of his illustrious and lengthy career. The
primary benefit of immunohistochemistry is its ability to allow scientists to view tissue and organ segments that would otherwise not be visible for research. In medicine, there is often
the need to look at a single cell, such as when studying the brain. Comprised of billions of nerve cells, it may be necessary to view only one; in
order to accomplish this, immunohistochemistry makes it possible to be able to do just that without having to disrupt the entire brain. It also makes it possible to grow
a single cell outside of the body, as in tissue culture, which brings even more ease to the overall procedure. However, sometimes there is a "compromise between sensitive detection
of the tracer and the immunohistochemical procedure" (Kressela, 1998, pp. 497-504) that precludes any beneficial findings. Landsteiner is responsible for developing the concept of immunohistochemistry as it is known today.
