this respect there are many secular songs, songs about love, that really could inspire a Christian in light of their selfless and passionate content. With that in mind the following
paper examines the song On Top of the World by The Carpenters (Karen Carpenter) and then examines how the song could deepen ones Christian faith. Karen Carpenters On
Top of the World and Christian Faith First and foremost, it should be understood that while Karen Carpenter sang this song she did not write it, nor did her brother
Richard. The man who wrote the song was John Bettis: "In 1969, he and friends Richard and Karen started the band The Carpenters, for which John wrote Top of the
World, Yesterday Once More, Goodbye to Love, and many others" (Pure Country, 2009). As has long been the case with many musical artists, many of their songs were actually written
by other people and as such have no personal creative connection to the experiences of the artist. This does not mean that the song did not hold personal meaning for
Karen when she sang it, but she did not write the lyrics or the song and as such they are not "directly reflective" of personal experiences of her own. In
other words, as it involves Karen Carpenter, there is no history behind the lyrics of this song and anything she was necessarily going through or experiencing. At the same
