is using terminology, especially with reference to the concepts of ends and means. The formula asserts that one should "act that you use humanity, whether in your own person or
in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end, never merely as a means" and in this sense one could equate humanity with the idea
of rationality, or rational nature, in the sense that the individual can set ends for himself and then pursue them in a rational manner (in Kants terms, this would mean
doing so in accordance with imperatives). An end
cam be defined as something which is the ultimate aim of ones actions, although the end in itself need not be ultimate goal, but instead be seen as instrumental: an
end which is at the same time a means. One reads Kant in order to pass a philosophy module, which is done in order to get an academic qualification, which
is done in order to find a more well-paid job, and so on. Alternatively, an end can be an end in itself, which is not seen as leading on to
other ends. Such an end might already exist, or might be something which the actor strives to bring about by his actions. In 4:428, Kant states that "The human being
necessarily represents his humanity or rational nature as an end in itself" by which he means that by taking the means to ones own ends, namely the ends of a
rational human being, one is doing so on behalf of all other rational beings as well as oneself.
