representations; for otherwise something would be represented in me which could not be thought at all, and that is equivalent to saying that the representation would be impossible, or at least would be nothing to me. Whether the representations are in themselves identical, and whether, therefore, one can be analytically thought through the other, is not a question that here arises. The consciousness of the one, when the manifold is under consideration, has always to be distinguished from the consciousness of the other; and it is with the synthesis of this (possible) consciousness that we are here alone concerned" (Kant 152-153). What seems to be key to the transcendental deduction is the principle of the transcendental unity of apperception. This concept refers to the unity in which all the manifold that is provided in an intuition is united in one concept of an object (Kant 158). Thus, the entitled objective must be distinguishable from the subjective unity of consciousness; this is also a determination of the inner sense through which the manifold for intuition is empirically provided (158). Whether one can become empirically conscious of the manifold as either simultaneous or as successive truly depends on ones unique circumstances or the surrounding empirical conditions (158). Kant goes on to elaborate on this point but concludes with an interesting factor. He says that a particular word suggests one thing but to another, it may suggest some other thing (140). Kant begins to lean towards a position where greater subjectivity is embraced. It is through this idea that intuition may be better understood. Signs that exist throughout the universe will present itself and it will have different meaning to different individuals. Many people seem to engage in such unconsciously as they think of events that could ...
