case, Kant was quite spiritual and looked for enlightenment. Kant, like all philosophers, was a seeker. Cicovacki criticizes Kants keeping of religion "within the limits of reason alone" (Goldberg, 2004, p. 832). Kant was above all a philosopher and someone who delved into subjects with reason at the forefront. Religion would not be good enough or substantial enough to convince Kant of its worth. There needs to be proof that God exists for example and this seems to be true of most of the classic philosophers. The problem with religion then, is that it is faith-based. No religion ever provides proof and all philosophers seek proofs. Kant claims that the manner of thinking of a head of state who favors religious enlightenment goes further when realizing that there really is no danger to his legislation in permitting his subjects to use reason publicly (Kant, 1784). This should be done even if it involves criticism of legislation currently in effect (1784). He goes on to say that only "a ruler who is himself enlightened and has no dread of shadows, yet who likewise has a well-disciplined, numerous army to guarantee public peace, can say what no republic may dare" (1784). Interestingly, about five years after the writing of this piece the French would take the heads of their monarchs, but what they wanted was not a republic; they wanted an enlightened monarchy. Kant clearly contributed a great deal to the movement of the day. Within that piece, one may glean that the philosopher did support the idea of enlightenment. He did not want to keep things hidden.
