we present the following paper which offers up a hypothetical situation, presented by the student, and then discusses what Rousseau and Kants replies would be to the situation.
The Situation The victim is a rich, heartless, and miserly old man who Peter thinks "deserves to die." Peter is not so much interested in getting his money as he
is in righting the fact that the old man possesses so much wealth while many people go hungry. He even decides to give the money to charity once he gets
the old man out of the way. Peter knows that murder is morally wrong but he feels that since the old man had made his money through his political position
and connections illegally and since he had been ruthless in his political dealings in order to get to the top, he did not deserve the protection of the law. Therefore,
Peter feels that there would be general agreement that everyone would benefit from his demise. Peter proceeds to kill the old man and keeps his promise to himself to distribute
the old mans money to the poor. While he fears being found out, when he is, the people not only forgive him, but elect him their new political leader for
having freed them from such a tyrant. Within a few years, however, Peter realizes that unless he has absolute power, he wont be able to put in place a just
political system. He convinces the majority of the people to give him such power for life, since in order to change the peoples consciousness in favor of justice, it might
