The Momence wetlands comprise a nature and game reserve on the Kankakee river in Illinois. The wetlands comprise flood plain
forest, upland forest, shrubbed areas and rivers. The Kankakee basin itself is currently the subject of a project to restore the original wetlands which have been damaged by industrialisation.
The region is predominantly a
mining area, producing stone, gravel and clay, and previously had active coal mines. Groundwater is an important resource in the region, and a large percentage of the regions residents, especially
in rural areas, rely on groundwater. This is taken from underground aquifers, the capacity of which is judged by sinking a series of wells. The majority of the wells tend
to be shallow, since there is a high level of chemical contaminants at greater depths.
The most reliable sources of groundwater are obtained from Silurian dolomite bedrock and from sandstone, although there are
