alientation in the world, the struggle of man to prove himself and the internal conflicts that occur when one is perceived as deceitful. These themes are prevalent in a
number of Kafkas stories and relate to the authors view of himself in the world. Problem Statement Kafka utilized a variety of images to present themes that are
representative of his personal struggles. Kafka had a declared conflict with his father, a man who dominated his social perspective and may have been central to Kafkas social separation.
Kafkas mother, a member of one of the prominent German/Jewish families living in Prague, factors into his stories in that he utilizes the Jewish identity as a measure of
separation in his stories. Kafka was not an author who wrote out of the sphere of his experience, even when his stories appear to take on mythic characteristics.
The central characters and actions often relate to biographical elements in the life of Kafka. Stories like Metamorphosis and The Trial provide support for the argument that
Kafkas authorship was deeply routed in personal conflicts and personal history. Research Questions/Hypothesis 1. How does Kafka integrate his sense of self in his stories? 2. What
is the evidence that supports a link between biographical information and authorship? 3. What are the central factors in Metamorphosis and The Trial that are representative of Kafkas life?
