a boy who literally is morphed into an insect. Of course, the work is subject to interpretation and is largely symbolic. The story line is after all rather implausible. In
the work, the protagonist is mutated into a large insect and so, this man is no longer himself. Part of the puzzle in Metamorphosis, and other Kafka works for
that matter, is that the audience usually has a job. That is, this author will not spoon feed his point of view but rather, it comes through only after careful
evaluation and attention to detail. The reader must interpret the symbolism, decide when the author is using a metaphor or if events are really happening, and clamp down on Kafkas
insights into humanity. Metamorphosis is above all about loneliness, despair, isolation and unfair treatment. The most poignant moments come when the protagonist goes through a barrage of events where he,
or it, is not accepted. While on the surface, and even digging slightly beneath, the concept of such themes will satisfy most readers and explicators of fiction, there may be
hidden, more deeper meanings in this Kafka classic. Because most authors draw on their own life experiences it makes sense to study Kafkas in relation to this compelling story.
Such an endeavor may provide one with an interpretation of events in the story that would be far different from one that does not consider the authors background. Franz
