nevertheless, as time goes on, Grete also becomes alienated toward her brother and this completes the dehumanizing process. The narrative begins with the metamorphosis already complete. Kafka presents this
impossibility from the beginning of the story, calmly insisting that the reader accept it as actual. As to possible explanations for this transformation, Gregors job as a traveling salesman has
obviously caused him to feel "insect-like" for quite some time as he labors constantly to support his mother, father and sister, scurrying back and forth between clients and an unappeasable
boss. Therefore, what Kafka proposes is that Gregors body transforms to match how he already perceives himself - as a loathsome insect. Following his metamorphosis, Gregors chief concern is not
towards his unusual condition, but rather toward finding the proper sort of food that would be capable of sustaining him in this new condition. Previously, Gregor relished wholesome food, such
as milk, but now milk is repugnant to him. What he craves now is rotten food that has become to decay. At the beginning of the narrative, Grete is
quite concerned about her brother when he is locked in his room, unwilling to let his family see his condition. His sister asks him in a "low, plaintive tone: Gregory?
Arent you well? Do you need anything?" (The Metamorphosis). After she gets over the initial shock of seeing her brothers condition, it is Grete who realizes that he will be
