why and how does Gregor Samsa die, and does the storys ending suggest that his death is a good thing? Discussion The death of Gregor is not so much a
good thing as it is inevitable. When Gregor first wakes to find that "in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug," (Kafka) he is still very
human, except in his outward appearance. His immediate concerns are how to get dressed and get to his job; he is the sole support of his parents and sister, and
he doesnt know what they will do if he cannot report to his job (Kafka). In other words, he is still thinking like a human being, and attempting to act
like one, in spite of his monstrous transformation. But it soon becomes apparent that no one can stand the sight of him, and he is voluntarily confined to his room.
Hes heartbroken of course, and there soon begins a long separation between him and the rest of his family. His sister brings him food twice a day and cleans his
room, but what once started as a gesture of love and affection soon turns to duty. She does it because someone must, and neither of their parents can stand to
be in the same room with Gregor. Interestingly, no one ever tries to communicate with Gregor. They react with horror and disgust on that first morning, and that is
the end of it. Perhaps they could have tried something as simple as having him rap once for "yes" and twice for "no," but they didnt even think of that
rudimentary device. Instead, they chose to deal with him based solely on his appearance, forgetting that he was their son and brother. Once they cut him off from the family,
