like Iraq, the United States felt the need, with the help from NATO, to rush to that countrys rescue, as the U.S. sought to recognize Kosovo as an independent country,
separate from Serbia. But there are differences between Kosovo and Iraq. The question we ask here is whether soldiers deployed to Kosovo in the late 1990s learned anything that could
help or hinder them if they are deployed to Iraq some years later. At first blush, there is nothing that remotely links
the two situations. In the late 1990s, the U.S.-led NATO forces became involved in the Kosovo-Serbian conflict because of ethnic cleansing and clashes between Kosovo Albanian rebels and Serbian military
forces (Stein, 1999). At the time, many members of the international community, including Europe and Russia, called for Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic to cease and desist in weapons build-up and
violence, calling for negotiations between the Serbs and Kosovar Albanians (Stein, 1999). However the war in Iraq was vastly different, and fought
(and is still being fought) for very different reasons. Many reasons were given to justify the U.S. invasion of Iraq and they included toppling the ruthless dictatorship of Saddam Hussein,
using the conflict as a stepping stone to promote democracy in the Middle East and destroying any weapons of mass destruction (Encarta, 2008). However, unlike the action against Milosevic on
behalf of Kosovo, the U.S. didnt have widespread support from the international community, relying on a smaller ground force (Encarta, 2008). Both actions were geared to weaken or remove the
power of ruthless dictators. Yet the cultures of Kosovo and Iraq are vastly different, meaning different steps have been needed to be taken in Iraq to take this into consideration.
