Out of this came the concept of knowledge management, a strategy to assist information technology and organizational effectiveness. At least, in theory. Beginning in the mid-1990s, many papers and articles
began appearing dealing with the concept of knowledge management -- but there are skeptics as to whether knowledge management is a bonafide movement, or a fad dreamed up by consultants
(Leonard and Koenig, 2002). In this paper, well be reviewing three authors who wrote pieces critically examining the concept of knowledge management.
The pieces spanned the whole argument, with two on opposite ends of the spectrum, and one in the middle. Principles of Knowledge Management
Some skeptics of knowledge management point out that its a movement of consultants to excuse, or "replace" the miserably failed "re-engineering movement" of the 1980s and 1990s (Prusak, 2001).
Others state that a broad definition of knowledge management has to do with a different type of strategic information management (Leonard and Koenig, 2002). Others point out that knowledge management
deals with "explicit and systematic management" of knowledge and the process of creating, gathering, organizing and using the knowledge to the best ability (Leonard and Koenig, 2002).
Knowledge management, in its very simplistic form, is one in which an organization takes steps to gather, analyze, store and share its knowledge both internally
and externally. The difficulty is that, behind this definition, very few people can actually put their fingers on what is meant by "knowledge" or "information.
