to be the number one fast food chicken chain, at least in the United States ("KFC," 2001). It owns or franchises approximately 11,300 outlets, with close to half of
those in the U.S. (2001). KFC is a division of TRICON Global Restaurants, a spinoff of PepsiCo and its sister businesses are Pizza Hut and Taco Bell (2001). TRICON
is actually the worlds number two fast food firm after McDonalds (2001). While it has done well primarily in the United States, it is well known in other parts of
the world such as China. A student writing a paper on this subject will want to point out that TRICON Global Restaurants had
recently announced plans to rapidly expand in Asia (Amorn, 2001). The corporation also noted that China is a good country for growth as well and it offers a great deal
of opportunity for TRICON (2001). While that may be the case, a student may want to point out that KFC may meet stumbling blocks when trying to expand its
fast food chain in China. Why? There are socio-cultural factors that affect demand for such fare in China. Fried chicken is an American dish. Although Chinese food is rather popular
in the United States, that does not guarantee success in China. Further, there are other considerations that go beyond the taste factor.
First, the people of KFC realized that doing business in China would not be easy due to the fact that it has a communist government. Also, China was expected
to demand a huge amount of scarce managerial resources and the primary constraint had been the limited number of Chinese-speaking KFC managers (Morrison, 2000). Indeed, there were practical considerations that
