Children as young as 14 and perhaps even 13 have been tried and sentenced as adults and when found guilty are put into adult prisons along with the most frightening
and dangerous of criminal men. The following paper examines some of the information available that indicates how such children suffer in prison. They are abused and are also at great
risk to become hardened criminals as well as mentally disturbed. Juveniles in Prison Each and every year it appears as though approximately 690,000 juveniles convicted of crimes and
thus admitted to some kind of correctional facility or another (Redding, 2000). They account for perhaps less than "1% of all inmates of adult prisons, with 5.400 juveniles in state
prisons in 1997 (Strom 2000)" (Redding, 2000). However, the number of juveniles in prisons has actually doubled from 1985 to 1997 (Redding, 2000). In addition, many states predict that even
juveniles will be admitted to prisons in the future. "The growth was due to greatly increased percentages of juveniles sentenced to adult prison for violent offenses...and drug offenses" (Redding, 2000).
As much as 5% of these juveniles admitted to adult prisons are younger than 16 years of age (Redding, 2000). It comes as little surprise to note that the
juveniles in adult prison are at a far greater risk for abuse than are the adults in prison. The following presents some of those risks and realities: "[T]hat they are
at greater risk for suicide (due to lack of supervision) and physical and sexual abuse from older inmates. They are 8 times more likely to commit suicide, 500 times more
likely to be sexually assaulted, and 200 times more likely to be beaten by staff than are juveniles in juvenile facilities (Beyer 1997). It is difficult for juveniles to avoid
