increasingly violent nature of juvenile crimes has been attributed to the exposure to violence in television, films, and video/computer games. When juveniles are picked up for a particular offense,
they are entered into the juvenile justice system, which is distinct from the adult court system. However, it was not always this way. In the nineteenth century, juveniles
criminally tried alongside adults and received identical sentences. Some were even executed for their offenses. However, this criminal justice practice changed in 1899 when the first juvenile court
was approved for the state of Illinois. Social activists were successful in pleading the case that juveniles should be judged as children in the eyes of the law.
However, because of the high incidences of violent juvenile crime, there is growing trend towards prosecuting juveniles as adults. This has placed the system of juvenile justice in serous
jeopardy of being overtaking by the adult court system in the near future. Overview of the Juvenile Justice System Although systems can vary somewhat from state to state, juvenile justice
typically has a similar protocol. At the time a juvenile is arrested, a decision whether or not to advance the case into the justice system or divert it into
an alternative youth program is made (Juvenile Court System, 2004). Such decisions are customarily made by law enforcement agencies after reviewing the suspects criminal history and interviews are conducted
