drugs by minors often affects many aspects of any given school system and will ultimately involve the juvenile justice system as well. The following paper reviews and summarizes and article dealing with this particular subject. The article, titled "Truancy: First Step to a Lifetime of Problems" and written by Eileen M. Garry, examines the problem of truancy as it is often the first sign of delinquent behavior more often associated with drug use. It is also a topic that will, more often than not, involve the juvenile justice system. Juvenile Justice, Drug Use, and Schools: Truancy "Truancy is a stepping stone to delinquent and criminal activity" (Garry, 2006). And, in many cases truancy and drug use go hand in hand, with increasing truancy leading to increased drug use. Garry (2006) indicates that those students who are absent from school are at a far higher risk for drug use which often will lead to criminal behavior. Garry (2006) also notes that one attorney indicated he had never seen a gang member who was not a truant first. As such truancy is a very important topic of concern for it involves schools and the juvenile justice system, as well as families and communities as a whole. In addition, this article indicates that 67% of youth who were absent from school tested positive for drugs, which clearly seems to be related to an increase in daylight crimes committed by youth (Garry, 2006). As such it is clear that drug use and truancy are clearly laying a foundation of more criminal activity where youth are involved.
