such close proximity would generate unavoidable culture conflict, as each social group tended to view its own standards of behavior as the norm and view the standards of others as
deviant.3 Frequently in Mark Salzmans True Notebooks, which recounts his experiences working juvenile offenders, there are indications that suggest the legitimacy of this perspective. For example, on commenting why
he did not want to go to a psychologically-oriented counseling session, one of the young men in Salzmans writing class, Raashad, commented on how participants are asked to close their
eyes and picture themselves going down some stairs into a workshop in the cellar and choosing tools. He says, "You supposta choose what tools you need and put em

is trying to help and the psychologist. Social learning theories : The social learning approach to explaining juvenile delinquency is founded on the idea that the vast majority
of human behavior is socially learned.5 This necessarily leads logically to the assumption that if conformity is a learned behavior than, so too, is deviancy and that it is
