Juvenile delinquency is at an all time high and many speculate that the reason is our deteriorating societal mores. Whatever the reason, this is not only an embarrassing situation
it is an unacceptable situation. Although we are one of the most progressive countries in the world, we have fallen flat on our faces when it comes to dealing
with this basic societal problem. Juvenile Correction Officers encounter juvenile deliquency on a daily basis. If anyone is versed in the societal problems that lead to juvenile delinquency
it is them. If anyone can intercede to turn around this problem, it is them. There are certain harsh facts
that must be acknowledged in this career path. Juvenile delinquency is often associated, for example, with juveniles that have been abused as children. Widom (2006) has found that
early child abuse and neglect increases the risk of being arrested as a juvenile by some fifty-five percent. Wilson and Kelly (2006) present an analogy that is certainly applicable
to the question of why juveniles commit crimes. They contend that "if a window in a building is broken and is left unrepaired, all the rest of the windows
will soon be broken". The job confronting the juvenile officer then is fixing the windows. One of the problems juvenile
correction officers commonly encounter is the systems hesitancy in when to deal with a juvenile as an adult or when to deal with them as a child. Between 1980
and 1998 it has been calculated that one out of two-hundred juveniles between age twelve and seventeen had been arrested for a serious or violent crime (Lynch). Those that
