US decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan near the end of World War II is surrounded by controversy. The US justified its actions as effecting
speedy resolution to a long and bloody affair. Others, however, have contended that not only were our reasons were less admirable, the bombings were not the real reason for
the resolution of the war. Hasegawa (2006), for example, contends that it was more the Soviet entry into the war that persuaded Japan to surrender than it was the
bombing itself. Takaki (1996), in turn, even goes so far as to contend that racism was one of the factors that influenced our decision to drop the bomb.
He contends, in fact, that racism combined with our desire to impress the Soviets to inspire us to unleash the power of the most horrific weapon of all time (Takaki,
1996). Alperovitz (1996) agrees, contending that then Secretary of State James F. Byrnes convinced President Truman that our relationship with the Soviets after the war would be shaped significantly
by the fact that we had atomic weapons and had demonstrated that we would use them. The intent of this paper is to argue that while we might have
been misguided in our decision to utilize the newly devised atomic weaponry against Japan, our intent was in fact to reduce the loss of life and suffering that had characterized
the war. While it is true that the USs relationship with Japan had been marked more by distrust
and suspicion even before World War II, our reasons for unleashing nuclear weapons against the Japanese were based on concern for world safety. Indeed, Japan provided a number
