Their first interest, of course, was to offer a cure for a very debilitating and life-threatening disease. Their second interest was in turning a profit in the manufacture of the drug. The intent of this memo, is to present a scenario in which the honored principles of capitalism and humanitarianism come into conflict. It will be demonstrated, however, that not only should human life be considered more valuable than economic profit but such a view would have been embraced by our founding fathers themselves. Even potentially more important, however, is the fact that economic profit is not always immediate in situation such as that that will be presented. While immediate profit might be sacrificed, the result is often the building of a name, reputation and allegiances that in the long run will amount to much. XYZ is not alone in hoping to profit from their business ventures. Companies across the world share this focus. Pharmaceutical companies typically turn a tremendous profit from their more successful drugs. A problem has resulted surrounding the release of this drug, however, that could threaten XYZs profitability. The new drug is desperately needed in six developing nations and the U.S. government has been requested to force XYZ to sell the drug to these nations at a price equal to no more than one-percent above actual manufacturing costs. Critics of the request content that the principle of capitalism will come into direct conflict with the principle of humanitarianism if the U.S. follows through with this request.
